All the ways in which ecosystems and living organisms can mediate or moderate the environment so that human well-being and safety are affected. These ES comprise the reduction of wastes, toxics and other nuisances by harnessing living processes (Haines-Young & Potschin 2013) ((Haines-Young, R. & Potschin, M.
