PermaNET: Permafrost and water resources management report

Target groups
Scientists; specific institutions.

Area of application
The output was developed for different pilot sites and it is not applicable to the whole Alpine Space because based on detailed knowledge and data of specific areas (study site Lazaun and study site Rossbänk for geochemical analyses of permafrost ice; study site Lazaun, study site Rossbänk and study site Sella for hydrological discharge measurements; study site Lazaun for the analysis of the contribution of permafrost ice to the hydrological water regime). Investigations were made only in one regione. Only the recommendations and the final checklist that has been designed in order to consider permafrost in drinking water resources management can be applied at a general level before deciding if using or not a spring in high mountain areas for drinking water supply.

Time frame
The output was developed during the project timeframe. Most of the data used for the analysis were collected in this period, while some other in previous ones.

Keywords
Related to the type of result: case study; checklist; recommendation.
Related to the thematic of the result: climate change; water quality; alpine headwaters; ecosystems; water supply; hydrological regime.

Accessibility
Free access.

Transferability and re-usability
Transferability and direct re-usability in other contexts seem difficult because the results of the analysis are presented but the scientific method followed by investigators to obtain the results it is not explained.

Sector policies addressed
Management of natural resources; ecosystem management; health; water resource management.
