Sustain basic services

Unbalanced service provision between urban, peri-urban and remote rural areas creates inequalities in living conditions and increases mobility between major towns and their hinterlands. With regard to the recommendations of accessibility and mobility (see Accessibility & Mobility), and those to strengthen the settlement hierarchy (see Strengthen small- and medium-sized urban centres), it is important to act in favor of maintaining and providing basic services (or Services of General Interest, SGI) in remoter areas. A major aim is to facilitate equal opportunities for the local population in its social, cultural and economic development. The ACCESS project provides best practices from pilot regions in this regard, e.g. experiences with sharing facilities, alternative service offer (e-services) and governance approaches to the joint planning of service offer.
