Abiotic processes refer to the physical (non-living) environment, for example, temperature, moisture and light, or natural mineral substances (Lincoln et al. 1998) 1), which influence living organisms directly or indirectly.
The AlpES project recognizes the relevance of abiotic processes as a basic input to ecosystem services. Abiotic outputs and abiotic services are relevant in environmental management and planning, however they are not in the main focus of the project.
