“Regional environmental governance” is a concept in political ecology and environmental policy that advocates sustainable regional development as the supreme consideration for managing all human activities (Balsiger & Debarbieux 2011, Brandes & Brooks 2005) 1) 2). It refers to the processes of decision-making involved in the management of the environment and natural resources (e.g. interference through projects, development plans). The term “governance” includes government, business and civil society, and emphasizes the management as a whole system.
The overall AlpES objective is to support the development of an environmental regional governance with the ecosystem service approach.
