All the ways in which ecosystems and living organisms can mediate or moderate the environment so that human well-being and safety are affected. These ES comprise the reduction of wastes, toxics and other nuisances by harnessing living processes (Haines-Young & Potschin 2013) 1). This furthermore includes the regulation of climate, water, and (human) diseases as well as mass flows as in avalanches. (Harrington et al. 2010) 2).
The AlpES project analyses at an alpine wide level the regulating services “Filtration of surface water by ecosystems”, “Protection of areas against avalanches, mudslides and rockfalls” as well as “CO2 sequestration by forests and bogs”.
