Les Orres (FR), the "Smart Mountain Grid" Living Lab
The third Living Lab aims to develop a smartgrid model for mountain resorts. A first brick of the smartgrid, an energy management system (EMS) controlling the energy consumption of the ski resort operations (ski lifts, snow making) and facilities, has been implemented in Les Orres in 2012-2014 as part of a former European project, ALPSTAR. Through the Smart Altitude third Living Lab, the goal is to expand the scope of the former EMS by including additional endpoints of high energy consumption, such as tourism housing (residences, hotels and condominiums), public lighting, public buildings, etc. The smart mountain grid project also includes modelling a self-consumption approach optimizing the utilization of local renewable energy with a real time demand/production balancing system. The implementation and animation of the Living Lab is under the responsibility of Les Orres, with EDF piloting modelling studies and system design.
