Prostorski razvoj predstavlja pomemben izziv v Alpskem prostoru, kjer morajo na omejenem ozemlju sobivati gospodarstvo, družba in okolje. Majhni posegi v kateregakoli izmed teh področij lahko sproži velike spremembe v drugih. Prav tako posegi na lokalnem, regionalnem in državnem nivoju vplivajo na druče države v Alpskem prostoru. Uravnotežen in skupen prostorski razvoj držav Alpskega prostora potrebuje informacije, ki so ustrezne, dostopne in razumljive in omogočajo preudarno sprejemanje odločitev. Dandanes je na voljo velika in raznolika količina informacij, kar nam velikokrat onemogoča najti prave in uporabne informacije. Po vrhu vsega pa je to zahtevno in nam vzame veliko časa. In tukaj nastopi vloga WIKIAlps:

WIKIAlps cilja na omogočanje uravnoteženega in skupnega prostorska razvoja držav Alpskega prostora s premagovanjem državnih meja. Kako?
Tako, da nudi delujoča dokončna orodja, ki bodo olajšala delo odločevalcem, javnim uslužbencem, raziskovalcem in podjetnikom. WIKIAlps je instrument, ki je namenjen zbiranju in uporabi izkušenj, rezultatov in metod in izbranih iAlpine Space 2007 - 2013 projects, especially in the areas of “inclusive growth” and “resource efficiency and ecosystem management”. It highlights:

• Not recognised synergies
• Remaining gaps
• Achievements that could be further implemented
• Emerging contradictions
• Potential requirements and benefits for sustainable transnational spatial development.

WIKIAlps approaches the analyses from three different perspectives:

• Project perspective: analysing the tools available through the results of selected Alpine Space projects. Re-organising the outcomes of these projects
• Policy perspective: identifying transnational needs and challenges based on the analysis of selected transnational and national official documents.
• Stakeholder perspective: competences matrix of stakeholders involved in spatial development in the Alpine Space.

• The methodology developed to undertake the different analyses and their results.
• Identification of transnational needs and challenges
• Planning documents and other spatially relevant documents
• Factsheets on capitalised projects
• Reorganisation of Alpine Space project results in the form of a search engine.
• An overview of stakeholders
• Access to the database
• Matrix of competences for stakeholders involved in spatial development in the alpine space
• WIKIAlps mini-guides
• Transnational recommendations for governance in terms of sustainable development, conclusions for relevance of these outcomes for macro-regional strategy and coordination of suggestions for 2014+ and national policy makers
• Practical recommendations on the methodology for the analysis of project results and their transferability; and how to integrate transnational issues in spatial policy planning.
