The project

WIKIalps tackles the capitalisation on selected Alpine Space 2007 - 2013 projects in the first “Inclusive Growth” and second “Resource Efficiency and Ecosystem Management” field focussing on missing links/synergis/unsolved contradictions between economic growth & environmental development. With the aim of contributing to a balanced territorial development in the Alpine Space and by involving different policy sectors & actors from local to international level, WIKIalpsobjectives are to analyse the impact of selcted orijects on sustainable spatial development / to identify the demands they have to meet to support spatial development/governance approaches. Expected main results are practical recommendations to policy makers on how to integrate/use WIKIalpsproject results in spatial development policy, enhancement of synergies among selected projects/topics and a web 2.0 tool (wiki) reorganising selected project outcomes and providing rapidly operative information ready-to-use for policy design.

The partnership

The partnership of WIKIAlps is composed of 7 partners from 6 Alpine countries, consisting of five public research centres (Eurac, FondMS, IRSTEA, ZRC SAZU, IGF) one private planning and consultancy office (IFUPLAN), and one association (SAB). The partnership represents a strong linkage between public and private organisations, thus favouring a linkage between policy makers and operational actors. The partners have many years standing experience in developing, conducting and managing ETC projects and have partly a common working experience since many years. The Lead Partner EURAC has itself more than 10 years of experience in leading ETC projects. Furthermore, all partners are exceptionally well linked in the relevant national networks, in collaborating with authorities from the local to the international level, and in elaborating results and recommendations for policy development, particularly in the Alpine Space.

The WIKIAlps partnership is composed of experts for spatial-development issues in the Alpine Space. It holds expertise in the following fields relevant for the project objectives: sustainable development, ecosystem management, economic and physical geography, spatial/regional planning, spatial dynamics and public policies, transport and mobility issues, tourism, analysis of the causes and effects of global change in mountain areas, ecosystem services, environmental protection, analysis of hydro-geological risks, natural hazards, promotion of safety in the mountains, local governance supporting decision makers on climate change issues, GIS and thematic cartography, data management, information and communication technology.

The observers

With a clear structure based on LP and WP leaders, and involvement of the different expertise and national linkages the partnership will organise its responsibilities with high efficiency. In all, 15 observers from the regional to the international level have been won over for this project. They are committed to contribute to: dissemination of results, attend meetings/working tables, give technical expertise, support & evaluation concerning project results.

WIKIAlps observers are: Alpine Convention, UNEP Vienna Office – Interim Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention (AT); ISCAR International Scientific Committee on Research in the Alps, MRI – Mountain Research Initiative (CH); CIPRA, Bundesministerium für Umwelt Naturschutz und Reaktorsicherheit, Lake Constance International Conference, Alliance in the Alps (DE); Grenoble Region Urban Planning Agency (FR); Europaregion Tirol-Südtirol-Trentino, Ministry of the Environment , Autonomous Region of the Aosta Valley (IT); Zasavje Regional Development Agency (SI); http://www.euromontana.org/Euromontana (BE); Centre for Mountain Studies (UK).

The Alpine Convention has expressed its special interest in integrating the WIKIAlps wiki in its System for the Observation and information on the Alps (SOIA) after project closure.
