Transforming the economy onto a resource-efficient path → increased competitiveness and new sources of growth and jobs through cost savings from improved efficiency, com-mercialization of innovations and better management of re-sources over their whole life cycle → requires policies that recognize the interdependencies between the economy, wellbeing and natural capital and seek to remove barriers to improved resource efficiency → spatial development will have to reflect the requirements of resource efficiency
